Finding Your Cancer Cure
A basic guide to surviving cancer............whereas orthodox medicine sees cancer as occurring largely by chance with genetic mutations, most unorthodox cancer practitioners see it largely as a consequence of metabolic imbalances which are in turn determined by our lifestyle choices such as diet etc. So an orthodox doctor will focus almost exclusively on killing the cancer cells, whereas an unorthodox doctor will focus more on restoring the inner biological environment that encouraged the cancer to form in the first place (unless there is an urgent need to quickly reduce the size or remove a tumour that is obstructing the function of some vital organ)...........
Supplements are essential to cancer patients to give the body the nutritional components it needs to function optimally. Also, certain supplements can significantly boost the immune system, an essential consideration for those with cancer. This is because it is our immune systems that not only kill cancer cells (or residue cancer cells in the case of conventionally treated patients) but restore the body to health after more intense treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Many nutrients also have direct anti-cancer properties quite apart from their ability to stimulate immune function, and antioxidants can help to prevent DNA damage.
It is also believed that cancers can begin due to specific nutrient shortages in the diet which weaken immune function.
A suggested food supplement regime for adults is as follows (for children you need to cut the quantities, and children under 20 should not take CoQ10).
Please remember to check your supplement list with your healthcare practitioner to make sure that none of these are contraindicated with any medication.
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) - 1000mg to 10,000mg three times daily. If you find ascorbic acid too acidic in large quantities, you can substitute with ascorbates, but be aware that they are less effective (donate one electron per molecule rather than ascorbic acid's two). If you overdose on Vitamin C, you get diarrhoea, so just cut back a little. Some doctors also give high-dose intravenous Vitamin C.
- Proteolytic Enzymes - it can be important to take high-dose protease enzymes 2 or 3 times a day away from meals to help break down extraneous proteins in the body, such as the mucos/protein that coats tumours, hiding them from the body's immune system. Some cancer specialists recommend taking oral pancreatic proteolytic enzymes every 4 hours. One professional brand is wobenzime.
- Vitamin B complex - 50mg of all the B Vitamins except B1. These vitamins are essential for energy production and for helping the body cope with stress. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) should not be taken, however, as it can encourage cell division, as does high doses of folic acid. (So moderate it.)
- Multi-Vitamin and Mineral - A strong and comprehensive multi-vitamin and mineral is important to take daily to make sure there are no nutritional holes in our diet. (Again, avoid ones that contain high dose Vitamin B1.)
- Omega 3 / Fish Oil capsules - 1000mg a day. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid that is a natural anti-inflammatory and helps with nervous system function.
- Vitamin D3 - 1000 to 10,000 IU per day - Vitamin D3 lowers the risk of developing breast, ovarian and colon cancer, and can also slow down or stop cancer cells multiplying. It has also been shown to be particularly effective with brain cancers.
- Salvestrols - 1000mg a day. These compounds discovered in certain fruit skins (types of phytoalexin) are converted by enzymes found predominantly in cancer cells to toxic compounds thus killing the cancer cells.
- N-Acetyl Cysteine - an amino acid that is essential for liver detoxification and the removal of heavy metals from the body.
- Beta-Carotene - 6mg 3 times a day - There is a direct correlation between low Vitamin A and cancer. Beta-carotene supplies the raw ingredients for the body to make its own Vitamin A, but it may also be beneficial to supplement Vitamin A directly. (Other carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin can be very helpful in reducing cancer risk.)
- Vitamin E - 400 - 1000 IU per day - important antioxidant that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and boost immune function.
- Magnesium - 1 to 2 grams per day. Magnesium is a vital mineral for cancer sufferers and is needed for over 300 different enzyme systems. You can also take epsom salt baths for easier transdermal absorption.
- Zinc - 15mg 1 to 3 times a day - important for fast healing and helping the action of Vitamin C and E. Zinc is also essential for a healthy prostate.
- Selenium - 200mcg per day - It is a fact that the less selenium a nation has naturally in its diet, the higher the cancer rate. Selenium works with Vit E to protect cell walls, and helps remove toxins.
- CoQ10 - 30mg per day (not if you are under 20): this powerful antioxidant not only protects cell membranes but give the immune system the energy to fight cancer cells.
- Lycopene - 15 - 25mg per day - powerful anti-oxidant from tomatoes that has powerful anti-cancer properties.
- Curcumin Complex - 500mg 2 times daily - Curcumin is a fantastically powerful antioxidant that also has anti-cancer properties.
- Chrysin - 1000mg a day - a naturally occurring polyphenol or flavanoid found in the passion flower.
- Biobran - 3000mg a day for 2 months and then 1000mg thereafter - Although expensive, this food supplement is one of the best for optimising immune function. Also reduces the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation. For a less expensive alternative, try beta-glucans or mushroom supplements (such as Coriolus Versicolor or Agaricus Blazei).
- IP6 (inositol hexaphosphate) - supplementing with this sugar phosphate has been shown to be extremely beneficial for some cancer patients.
- Green superfood - such as klamath blue green algae, spirulina, chlorella and/or wheat grass juice. Chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants, is a powerful detoxifier and immunity booster.
- Probiotics - There are 10 times the number of microbes in our gut as there are cells in our bodies, and these are vital for breaking down nutrients in our intestines for absorption by the body. Therefore it is important to take a strong multi-probiotic every day. (This is especially important for those who are on chemo or any other therapy that kills gut microbes.)
